Social Media is an ever-expanding tool to reach billions of people and businesses around the world. Thinking back to the year of 2006 when I began my undergraduate college career, I had just begun using Facebook. It was a way for me to connect with old and new friends. It has allowed me to stay in better touch with friends and family who live states or countries away, it also reminds me of that persons birthday which I never would have remembered had it not been for Facebook. Facebook and LinkedIn were really the extent of my social media uses. I used both these platforms as an excellent source to maintain my personal and professional relationships. Aside from this I didn’t see the point in taking time out of my busy schedule to spend more time on social media. In recent years I have begun to realize the increasing benefits of the different social media platforms, especially when it comes to business.
When it comes to business, social media is one of the best, most efficient ways to reach out to a potential customer or someone of interest. It all depends on the nature of your business or goal to determine the best social media platform. It is amazing all the different tools that are available, and how frequently they are used. The best way to get familiar with these social media platforms is by using them. I am now on the quest to best familiarize myself with the social media outlets that will be most beneficial to myself. I find it amazing all the different blog sites that are out there, according to Dave Kerpen over 150 million. There seems to be a blog site to any imaginable subject. Since beginning the ME program in the spring of 2014, I have a much greater appreciation for the blogging world and the benefits for it.
I am in the process of planning a wedding for the summer of 2015 and my fiancé has a newfound love for Pinterest. As much as it might drive me crazy the amount of time she spends on Pinterest, it really has provided some great ideas for our wedding. I am sure that it is saving us time and money in the long run. Just as Dave Kerpen mentions in Likeable Social Media how he and his wife have used social media to help renovate and decorate their home at one point, my fiancé and now myself are starting to use it to plan our wedding. There are many different benefits on how to use social media for the personal and business aspects of life.
One other social media platform that I use that is not mentioned in the Appendix of Likeable Social Media, due to the fact that I believe it didn’t start until after the book was published, is the music application Spotify. This music playing application has really brought a social aspect to listening to music. Following what others are listening to through the app, being able to connect through Facebook, and being able to send songs and playlists to friends. I am unaware of any business applications for this yet but I am curious as to what will happen in the future. I can see bars or restaurants having playlists for certain nights or occasions and guests being able to socially interact with the playlist making recommendations or feedback on what kind of music is being played. I know that there are electronic “Juke Boxes” in bars now that you can play a song that you purchase through the “juke box” application on your phone and not have to get up to chose a song. I feel like Spotify or other music applications could take this to a whole new level making it that much more social and beneficial for a business.
It is amazing how much social media has changed since 2006, and who knows what the future will bring. I think about how Whatsapp was recently acquired for over a billion dollars, and how SnapChat was offered 3 billion to be acquired. Apps that may seem pointless to myself can have such a great impact on so many people. I am starting to learn all the different social implications social media can have on someone or influence a business. Who knows what the next big social media platform will be. I am in the process of trying to learn how to best utilize these social media platforms to best benefit marketing and business for my hopeful business of the future.
